3 Tips to Avoid a Blowout on Your Next RV Trip
A tire blowout on an RV is one of the most stressful things that can happen on a road trip. It is also one of the most preventable. North Atlanta RV Rentals takes pride in maintaining an RV rental fleet that is road-ready for every adventure, and these three tips apply whether you are renting from us or hitting the highway in your own unit.

1. Check Tire Pressure Before Every Trip
RV tires require significantly higher pressure than standard vehicle tires, and the correct pressure varies with the vehicle’s weight and the load being carried. Underinflated tires generate excess heat during highway driving. That heat buildup is one of the most common causes of blowouts. Check pressure when the tires are cold, before the vehicle has been driven, and compare the reading to the manufacturer’s recommended specification rather than the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall.
2. Inspect Tire Age, Not Just Condition
A tire can look perfectly fine from the outside and still be a blowout risk. RV tires degrade from the inside out as rubber compounds break down over time, and age is just as important as visible wear. Most tire manufacturers recommend replacing RV tires after five to seven years, regardless of tread depth. Check the DOT code on the sidewall to determine the manufacturing date before any long trip. Tires that look good but are older than that window are worth replacing before you head out.
3. Know Your Payload and Do Not Exceed It
Every RV has a weight rating, and exceeding it puts enormous stress on the tires. It is easy to gradually overload an RV without realizing it. Gear, food, water, and personal items add up faster than most people expect. Weigh your loaded vehicle at a truck scale before a long trip and compare it against the gross vehicle weight rating. Tires operating at or beyond their load capacity are far more vulnerable to failure under highway conditions.
